French Education system
Studying in France is an exciting opportunity, but understanding a new education system can take time. Whether you are a student or a parent, understanding how study levels and qualifications work makes it easier to compare programmes and choose the right path.
The French higher education system has its own terminology, but the main stages are easy to understand once you know what to look for.
From secondary school to higher education in France
In France, students complete secondary school with the Baccalauréat (Bac), or an equivalent qualification for international students, before entering higher education.
Study levels are often described by the number of years completed after the Bac. Bac+2 means two years of higher education, Bac+3 three years and Bac+5 five years. For international students, Bac+3 is generally comparable to undergraduate-level study, while Bac+5 refers to postgraduate-level study.
These terms describe a level of study, but they do not necessarily tell you how the qualification itself is formally recognised.
Study level and qualification recognition
This distinction is important when comparing programmes in France. A programme's duration or academic level does not necessarily determine how the qualification is formally recognised.
For example, terms such as Licence, Grade de Licence, RNCP, Master and Grade de Master have specific meanings in the French system. A three-year programme should therefore not automatically be considered equivalent to a French Licence, just as a postgraduate programme is not automatically equivalent to a French State-recognised master's degree.
When choosing a programme, look at both the level of study and the type of qualification awarded.
Types of higher education institutions
University is only one route into higher education in France. Students can also study at business schools, specialised schools and other higher education institutions.
The right choice depends on your academic background, subject and goals. Some programmes have a strong academic focus, while others place greater emphasis on practical learning and preparation for professional life.

The MBA Sustainable Leadership is a postgraduate business programme taught entirely in English. With a focus on sustainability and responsible leadership, it is aimed at graduates looking to progress towards advanced management and leadership studies. The qualification is awarded and recognised by EMA, within the GEDU educational network and internationally.
